Jungle-Carpet Python

I first obtained this python in March 2002. He/she is approximatly 40cm. He is a member of the Morelia Spilota family. the sub-species Morelia spilota cheynei. The colour patters consist of anything from dark brown and black, to an amazing bright yellow on a black background. There underneath is usually cream yellow to white/pink.

There size will vary from 6ft to 12ft depending on its diet. If it knows there is a solid food supply of large prey. There prey may consist of small 'pinkie' mice for the babies, up to mice, rats, rabbits, birds, possoms and some larger species have been known to take down and eat wallabies. Some people will tell you that these snakes are very aggresive and will strike whenever given the chance. I believe this is not true. My snake has only bitten me twice. These two were totally my own fault. It only bit me as I put my hand in too close while trying to feed it.

My snake enclosure consists of a fish tank with a modified lid. I made a seperate lid out of MDF. I did this so I was able to screw a 60watt lightbulb into it. I also have made a screen vent. I am currenty building a nother enclosure at school. It is 1600mm tall and hsa three sections in it, 450mm, 450mm and 750mm. This is also bade from MDF. To view pictures of the cages click here.
